Prince Harry and Duchess Meghan blame the Royal Family’s bad blood for their split from conducting regular duties. The resulting break is being called “Megxit” and has left people from the UK to the US split over who’s right and who’s wrong.

According to People, much of the reported rift between Harry and his brother Prince William stems from some ill-received advice about Meghan Markle. William warned his brother to slow down the trajectory of his relationship with Markle. This allegedly didn’t sit well with Prince Harry, and resentments formed. There have also been reports that Prince Harry stopped spending as much time with his old friends like Tom Inskip once he and the Duchess of Sussex started dating. Even at Markle’s introductory meeting with Harry’s side of the family, there was an inappropriate exchange with Princess Michael of Kent who wore a Blackamoor brooch that many deemed racist.

A source close to the royal couple told People: “This is not how they wanted to handle this, but Meghan and Harry’s hand was forced,” says the friend. “There is so much bad blood in that family - it’s toxic,”  adding, “If relationships had been better, things would have been different.”

The press coverage of Markle is also deeply upsetting to the couple. She is said to have objected to the way the British media blames her for Harry’s preexisting unhappiness with his royal role. There are also the unfair comparisons of her to Kate Middleton. In one article, a UK publication praises Kate Middleton for showing off her baby bump. Meanwhile, there is a separate article of Markle lovingly rubbing her belly, and being accused of vanity and narcissism for doing so. She and Prince Harry have been deeply bothered by the lack of empathy they’ve received when such moments have occurred. Markle was so incensed when she appeared in the documentary Harry & Meghan: An African Journey, she told interviewer Tom Bradby that “not many people have asked” if she was doing “okay.” This was Markle’s first public nod to the issues within Buckingham Palace.

The funny thing about toxic people is that they never choose to confront their own toxicity. When Princess Michael of Kent chose to meet Meghan Markle while wearing a racist brooch back in 2017, that was a conscious decision. Although she later apologized, she made the choice to wear something to elicit a reaction or response from Markle. Did she really think that this terrible symbol would be cherished or make Meghan Markle feel welcome? Princess Michael is royal by marriage and has access to money, education, and historical precedent. She knew what she was doing, and an apology doesn’t make it better.

As well, friends and family members warning Harry about a life with Meghan is also shocking. Just because she’s not the typical choice, doesn’t make her the wrong choice. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex are seeking happiness and independence in their married life, and Megxit is a strong step in that direction. Since some members of the British press don’t realize that it’s gauche to call people of African descent “chimpanzees” or “savages” or “from the Colonies,” it’s good that Meghan and Harry have enough self-respect not to put up with that level of disrespect. In 2020, humans should no longer tolerate these disgusting, outmoded, and cowardly words that reek of fear from those who speak them. Congrats to Meghan and Harry on their new life in Canada. May they finally get the modern-day fairy tale ending they deserve!
