Rainn Wilson is a comedian, actor, writer, producer, father, husband, the list goes on. There’s nothing this talented man can’t do. As many know by the looks of him, Rainn is most known for his role as Dwight K. Schrute in The Office. Dwight was the rule-abiding paper salesman who had it out for Jim Halpert and would do anything to become Manager of Dunder Mifflin Scranton.
Although Wilson portrayed the role of Dwight for eight years, he’s much more than just Dwight Schrute. Rainn has been apart of many movies, TV shows, and shorts that show off the magic he carries. And while it may be hard to get Dwight’s memory out of our heads, Wilson deserves some credit for the other works he’s done outside of The Office. Keep scrolling now for 10 of them!
JUNO
This may come as a shock but Rainn Wilson was in Juno! Juno came out in 2007 and was about a young teen who became pregnant and decided to give her baby up for adoption. The movie won many awards and stars Michael Cera along with Ellen Paige.
In the movie, Rainn portrays a man who works at a local convenience store (inside a gas station) and makes quirks towards Juno for buying a pregnancy test. Him saying “Third test today, mama bear. Your Eggo is preggo” was enough to bring some humor to an otherwise dark moment.
SMURFS: THE LOST VILLAGE
Who doesn’t love Smurfs? Those adorable blue creatures rocked the box office, and when it was time to find the voice of evil wizard Gargamel, Rainn Wilson was the man for the job.
As the main antagonist, Gargamel’s main goal is to destroy the Smurfs. He’s gruesome and cruel and overall, selfish. Being the voice actor to such an evil wizard shows true talent coming from an actor who does comedy so well. Not to mention the movie raised over $197 million dollars in box offices worldwide, proving that the movie’s chosen cast was a success.
TRANSFORMERS: REVENGE OF THE FALLING
In the middle of filming The Office, Rainn Wilson also popped up in Transformers: Revenge of the Falling. Starring Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox, Transformers was about Sam being brought back to a life filled with Autobots and Decepticons.
In the film, Wilson portrayed Professor Colan, Sam’s professor. In one memorable scene, Sam is sitting in class but can’t stop seeing symbols which launches him into a panic in front of the class. Instead of being concerned over Sam’s panic attack, Professor Colan gets upset at being upstaged and interrupted during his lecture.
MY SUPER EX-GIRLFRIEND
My Super Ex-Girlfriend was a fun movie about a man dumping his girlfriend only to discover that she was actually a superhero named G-Girl. Starring Uma Thurman, Anna Farris, Rainn Wilson, and Luke Wilson, the movie had a strong cast. Sadly the movie didn’t do too hot in theaters. Nevertheless, Rainn had the role as Vaughn Haige; Luke Wilson’s best friend. In his natural role, Rainn did a great job as the funny best friend adding some humor to his friend’s failing romance.
AMERICA’S SWEETHEARTS
America’s Sweethearts released in 2001 and starred Catherina Zeta-Jones, Julia Roberts, John Cusack, and Billy Crystal. The film was about a superstar couple going through a public breakup, which required some hardcore backup from one hard-working assistant. The film did well in box offices, making around $130 million.
Although Rainn Wilson didn’t have a starring role, he played a man named Dave O’Hanlon and got to work alongside some big-named stars in Hollywood.
THE MEG
The Meg only came out last year, making this one of his more recent roles. In the film, Wilson plays Morris; a billionaire who funds the exploration. As the second most important character in the movie, Morris will do anything to be saved after Hell breaks loose. He selfishly lies and works alone to make sure he comes out okay in the end (even though others have already died).
The Meg did fantastic at the box office and made over $500 million worldwide. It was nice to see Wilson in a starring role since his Office days (even though he was killed at the end…).
PERMANENT
Permanent was the endearing movie about a family going through some rough times in their day-to-day lives. With a little girl who’s bullied and just wants to be popular, and parents who can’t seem to get along, this family of three going through the efforts in becoming whole again.
Rainn plays the role of Jim, the father of Aurelie and husband to Jeanne. The film deserved more praise than it got and we finally saw Rainn in a starring role.
ADVENTURE TIME
If you thought Smurfs was Rainn’s only animated gig, you’d be wrong. He portrayed Rattleballs, Sparkle, and Peace Master in the cartoon Adventure Time. The fantasy/adventure TV show was about a boy and his best friend—who was a dog—who have the capabilities for changing size and shape.
Wilson’s main character, Rattleballs, was a robot who protected Candy Kingdom. He also voiced Sparkle the baby, who was found in the forest. And Peace Master, a man filled with great magic. Rainn voiced the three characters from 2014 to 2016.
ARMY OF ONE
Army of One came out in 2016 and starred big names like Nicolas Cage, Russell Brand, and, of course, Rainn Wilson. The film was about Cage’s character who received a message from God himself and decided to go on an adventure to find Osama Bin Laden and bring justice to his name.
While the film was an interesting one, it did not do well.
BACKSTROM
In 2015, Wilson played the role of Everette Backstrom in a title named after his character, Backstrom. The comedy/drama is actually based on a book series about Detective Everett Backstrom and his team who try to solve cases in the city of Portland. As a selfish and self-destructive detective, he brings some humor in dark scenarios. Sadly, the show didn’t last long.
